Communications service providers are faced with cost recovery issues involving VoIP fraud and line termination issues and need business intelligence facilities that provide insight into network usage to identify billable and non-billable traffic. Enterprises are increasing their utilization of social media, leaving IT departments faced with the challenge of ensuring proper use while preventing information leaks and security breaches. Government agencies are tasked with the prevention and detection of illegal activities and cybercrime. The cloud computing paradigm requires data center operators to provide for security, authentication, and detection of outside threats. Deep Packet Inspection has long been a technology that relies on parallel processing and multicore technology to reassemble, analyze, and provide meta data about packet flows and the applications therein. But how do you cross the chasm between DPI technology to business intelligence revenue and/or cost recovery capabilities?

At the beginning of an Open Source Project, you often start with a solution, commercial or noncommercial, with a known quality level. Then you go about customizing it by adding patches for project specific components, specific peripherals, performance optimizations, power management optimizations, etc. Over the life span of your project it is hard to guarantee it will continue to function with the quality level of the original release. Does your operating system still work with the patches that your team added? Will all the components work together when you perform an update or need to change a peripheral? Do you have a comprehensive test suite to ensure that your regression testing strategy is effective? One possible solution is to utilize a third party company that has the testing expertise and experience that can easily integrate their knowledge and test assets into your software development process. This webinar will review the process flow required and explain the pros and cons of integrating an outside company into your Development Life Cycle.
Presented by: Montavista
<p><i>Speaker(s): Joe Pearson (Director of Software Quality Assurance, Montavista) </p>

OSM looked for product innovation that will have a positive impact on the embedded design community and bring benefits including cost savings, performance improvements, and faster time to market. The OSM staff selected three winners from the Silicon, Software, and Strategies categories, plus an overall winner capturing the title of “Top Embedded Innovation of the Year.”

According to Warren Webb, OpenSystems Media, Embedded Computing Design Editorial Director, “Our challenge was to research the embedded design community to identify the top innovations that lead in the industry.” He added, “After reviewing the various product innovations, we selected a winner in each of the silicon, software, and strategies categories based on creativity, uniqueness, and value to the embedded community.”

Silicon:

Cyclone V and Arria V SoC FPGAs – Altera Corporation

FPGA technology is a popular approach to embedded design, allowing engineers to quickly create single-chip circuit configurations within a shortened development schedule. This new System-on-Chip (SoC) product family from Altera combines an ARM-based hard processor system with 28 nm FPGA fabric using a high-bandwidth interconnect.

Software:

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. – Virtual System Platform (VSP)

The Virtual System Platform (VSP) from Cadence Design Systems enables designers to create a virtual prototype of the expected hardware and begin software design, verification, and system analysis before committing hardware to production.

Strategies:

Logic PD, Inc. – DM3730 T+W SOM

The DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless System-On-Module (SOM) from Logic PD provides this connectivity with a board offering access to 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, and GPS. With built-in network connectivity, embedded designs can enable remote operation and data collection while reducing hardware costs by eliminating the local user interface.

Top Embedded Innovation of the Year for 2012:

MIPS Technologies – Aptiv Generation of Products

MIPS’ new Aptiv Generation microprocessor cores, including the proAptiv, interAptiv, and microAptiv families, offer three distinct performance levels for home entertainment, mobile, networking, and embedded applications.

Winners will be featured in the Top Embedded Innovations department of the August Embedded Computing Design, Annual Resource Guide. Embedded Computing Design magazine is the largest printed and circulated magazine in the embedded space with more than 42,000 engineers reading it.
